Gum health in children

Encías inflamadas en niños: Salud de las encías

The first teeth in children appear between the 5th and 8th month of life approximately, and that is when it is recommended to make the first visit to the children’s dentist. With early visits to the specialist we can detect problems such as inflammation or bleeding, two of the most obvious symptoms related to gum disease.

Gum health in children’s dentistry

Bleeding gums in children is a sign that is detected in 45-63% of the child population and is a consequence of the accumulation of bacteria on the surfaces of the teeth, which causes inflammation of the gums in children. Inflamed gums in children are related to two types of diseases: gingivitis and periodontitis.

Gingivitis in children is a disease limited to bleeding and inflammation of the gums, while periodontitis is very serious as it causes dental loss of temporary and permanent teeth. The prevalence of periodontitis in children is extremely low, affecting only less than 1% of the population, and is usually related to alterations in the child’s immune system.

Dental Hygiene and prevention

Both childhood gingivitis and childhood periodontitis are two oral health problems in children that require early diagnosis by the dentist. For this, a complete examination of the gums is necessary, which includes a gingival probing in all the pieces by means of a periodontogram, as well as x-rays to detect bone loss around the teeth. After a diagnosis of the disease, the dentist must apply the appropriate treatment which consists of teaching children a hygiene and oral care program and deep cleaning of the gums to eliminate bacterial deposits that have accumulated inside the gums. With this treatment, the gums recover their health, and it is only necessary to carry out periodic treatments every 6–12 months, depending on the child’s predisposition to these diseases.

Prevention is therefore the most important factor to enjoy optimal oral health in children. Teaching a brushing routine, observing the warning signs, and regular visits to the dentist are the best basis for good prevention.
